How to keep your dog cool in summer

Cómo mantener a tu perro fresco en verano

Summer means sun, beaches, and outdoor cafes… but also high temperatures that can seriously affect our dogs. Unlike us, they don't sweat to regulate their temperature; they do it mainly by panting and through the pads of their paws. That's why, when the heat is intense, they need a little extra help to stay cool and comfortable.

Here are some practical (and easy) tips to help your dog enjoy the summer without stress:

1. Keep water always at hand

It seems obvious, but it's worth repeating: your dog should always have fresh, clean water available. If you go for a walk, always bring a water bottle and a portable bowl. An extra tip: you can add a couple of ice cubes to keep it cold longer.

2. Avoid the hottest hours of the day.

Between 12:00 and 17:00 the sun is strongest. It's best to go for walks early in the morning or at dusk. This helps prevent heatstroke and also protects their paws from the scorching sidewalks. (Tip: If you can't keep your palm on the ground for more than 5 seconds, neither will your dog.)

3. Frozen snacks for dogs

Nothing beats a refreshing treat. You can make homemade ice pops with unsweetened natural yogurt, suitable fruits like bananas or apples, and even unsalted chicken broth. Pour them into ice cube trays and… you'll have the perfect summer snack!

4. Cool spaces at home

Create areas where your dog can lie down peacefully out of direct sunlight. A cooling gel mat or a damp towel on the floor can make a big difference. If you have a fan or air conditioning, make sure your dog can enjoy it too (without being blown directly on).

5. Splashing and water games

If your dog loves water, a small pool in the garden or playing with the hose will be paradise. And if you prefer the beach or river, remember to check beforehand that they are dog-friendly areas. Besides cooling off, it will be a fun outing for both of you!

6. Regular brushing

Regular brushing helps remove dead hair and improves skin ventilation. However, avoid shaving their coat without veterinary advice: their fur, in addition to providing warmth in winter, also protects against heat and sunburn.

In summary

Keeping your dog cool in summer is a matter of small gestures: fresh water, shade, walks at appropriate times, and the occasional ice cream treat. This way, you'll avoid unpleasant surprises and enjoy the best part of the season: sharing happy and peaceful moments with your furry companion.

Because, after all, summer wouldn't be the same without seeing them running around happily... and with their tongues hanging out from having so much fun! 🐶☀️
